CTG Definition of a "Troop" and "Wrangler" & how to get your trooping credit for participating!

Recommended Posts

The following is what defines a "Troop" in the eyes of the Connecticut Garrison.

??

Who is eligible to get Troop Credit?

All active members with an approved costume that are in good standing with the 501st Legion are eligible to participate in events and receive credit for their participation.?? This includes out-of-garrison members who want to participate in Connecticut troops.

"I'm a cadet/trainee.?? Can I receive troop credit?"

No, you must have an approved costume and be a full member to receive troop credit.

"Does Wrangling get me Troop Credit?"

No, you must be in costume to receive troop credit

"What is a 'Wrangler'?"

A "Wrangler" is any participating adult who wants to actively assist in a troop out-of-costume.??

Wranglers aren't around to "Hang out" necessarily.?? At many events Wranglers have implied or detailed responsibilities such as:

  • Keeping the Troopers safe (helping them navigate, keeping an eye out for obstacles, having access to life safety items such as water or snacks)
  • Keeping spectators off of troopers - Often people want to do things to us.?? Wranglers are there to help prevent that
  • Maintaining positive control of equipment or sensitive items - Wranglers need to know where phones and wallets are stored and help with maintaining their security if asked
  • General costume fixes and help when needed
  • Miscellaneous trooping tasks that may arise that costumed troopers cannot perform.
  • Moral support and general morale (hanging out)

Wranglers can perform any or all of the above responsibilities so long as their participation does not interfere with the troop or the safety of the participants or public.

If you're a wrangler it is advised to wear either Connecticut Garrison, 501st or general Star Wars branded clothing or accessories to be easily identified by the troopers.

"My Significant Other / Family Member Wants to Wrangle.?? Can they?"

Yes, this is encouraged and makes the event more fun!?? Just please make sure they abide by an appropriate standard of participation.?? You the trooper are responsible for any non-member you bring and their behavior.

"I MEET ALL NECESSARY CRITERIA, BUT HOW DO I GET CREDIT FOR A TROOP?"

#1 - You must be a member in good standing who participates IN COSTUME at an event listed as an official event by the Connecticut Garrison or another recognized 501st Legion satellite (i.e. other garrisons or outposts etc)

#2 - Trooping is an active effort by the costumer to be a real and active participant in the event.?? A character is considered "Out of costume" or a "Non participant" if they are non-engaging, out of full costume (not wearing helmet, improperly dressed), or engaging in behavior which would draw negative attention to the Connecticut Garrison or the 501st Legion.

Shorter Events (<3 hours)

There will be many events that are very short with few attendees.?? These events the expectation is to participate actively in costume for the duration of the event.??

Safety / Water / Bio / Other reasonable breaks are expected as need.?? Comfort and safety of troopers is priority, however excessive long breaks and general non participation in short events may put your receipt of trooping credit in jeopardy.

Average Events (3-8 Hour events)

Most of the events will be a "Work Shift" worth of trooping.?? Generally in the 3-6 hour range depending on the event.?? Again.?? As with shorter events,?? the expectation for troopers is to participate actively in costume for the duration of the event.

Safety / Water / Bio / Other reasonable breaks are expected as need.?? Comfort and safety of troopers is priority, however excessive long breaks and general non participation in these events may put your receipt of trooping credit in jeopardy.???? When signing up for any normal event you should be prepared to actively participate for the entire event.

Depending on venue and length of the event the following will be acceptable on a troop by troop basis:

  • Splitting the troop into "Shifts" which would allow the entire duration of the troop to be manned but with different troopers allowing for shorter duration in full costume.
  • Dressing down for a longer break and coming back to finish the troop
  • Pre-troop coordination with command staff about late arrival or early departure of participating members

Long Events (>8 Hour - Multiple Day Events)

Many events are very long "Day"?? or Multiple Shift events.?? Some are multiple day events.??

The expectation for long events is that Troopers will participate actively, in costume for a reasonable length of time as determined by the command staff ideally to ensure that the entire duration of the event is able to be manned to an acceptable degree by costumed personnel.????

This is a very nebulous definition because long events can be tedious and complicated.?? Long hour and multiple day events often take serious coordination and execution efforts.?? The definition of what qualifies as a troop in these events will be decided by the command staff on an event by event basis generally using the guidelines for other events as listed above.

EXCEPTIONS:

If there is an issue meeting the above standard for any reason., Command can make an exception and award or deny troop credit on a case by case basis.?? All exception determination decisions will be approved directly by the Commanding Officer or their chosen representative.?? No other members have the authority to grant exceptions.

Examples of Award Exception:

  • Trooper is a willing and active participant but has a medical condition and cannot fully participate as required
  • Trooper coordinates with command prior to the event to work out a reasonable level of participation
  • Trooper must arrive late or leave early due to circumstances beyond their control

Examples of Denial Exception:

  • Trooper is not in proper costume
  • Trooper takes excessive breaks or does not participate reasonably (i.e.?? you can't show up in costume then do your own thing separate from the Garrison's trooping responsibilities)
  • Trooper arrives or leaves early without coordination or valid excuse
  • Trooper is rude or unprofessional to members of the garrison or public

??

For greater clarification or questions about exceptions contact command staff.
