Imperial Death Trooper WIP

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! So I joined the CTG forums a while back and have already sounded off in the recruits tab. I mentioned that I've been working on a DT build for the 501st, but never got around to actually making a WIP post in this forum so here we go:

Edit (3/25): So I just received my undersuit in the mail, however, it was sent to my college campus before I even get there so I won't be able to wear it for a few days XD. Hoping to upload some pics of it by next week.

Situation in Russia has taken a turn for the worse and Armory Shop Props is no longer able to fulfill my DT armor kit order.??

I've sent in a full refund request to PayPal, however, due to currency conversions and the Russian ruble being valued less than it did in February, I'll probably end up losing $110. As far as I understand it, I get refunded the original amount the seller received, so 96,404 rubles. Was worth $1275 in February, but now thats worth about $1165

Plenty of research, I think you'll find it all domestically too.?????Cool armor !

??

I have the 'TRamp' audio system...I dig it. I'm pretty sure there is a DT voice file for it too.

??

Check these guys out definitely in your research....

Yea, I've been looking around the SpecOps threads for shop suggestions but some of the shops currently offering armor kits have some inaccuracies that, at that price point, I'd rather not have. I could purchase the files off of Tom Campbell, but I'll probably be out of a 3D printer in a month, so I wont have the means to print the armor for myself. I'll probably end up ordering a fiberglass resin kit from Jim Tripon, however, I'm waiting to hear back from another shop before I make my decision.??

??

I ordered a helmet from a shop in Europe so I dont want to order one from Jim if I'm gonna receive that one, but still remains to be seen how that plays out.

I'm almost done working on my E-11D blaster! I still have a few small pieces that need to be sanded and primed, but I've also bought screws and am currently working on getting the whole blaster assembled. I have a few question that I hope some people may have answers to:

??

1. (Unless I'm blind) I don't see a description on the Death Trooper CRL on the barrel's color. I've heard from others that this is supposed to have an aluminium finish to it. I have Alclad Chrome on hand for my Din Djarin build. Could I use this instead of aluminium?

??

2. I've spoken with @Feliz??and he's in the same boat as I am regarding lighting/electronics for the blaster. I want to equip the blaster with all of the necessary LEDs, however, I've never worked with electronics before and I'd appreciate any help with this.

??

Thanks!

Update on the armor situation:

??

ASP cancelled my order and refunded my money. Thankfully, there was no change in the currency values through paypal, so I got all my money back???

??

A guy in Washington State reached out to me to sell his DT armor for really big discount and it's since come in the mail! Came with an ASP Mk.4 helmet, finished belt, and finished armor, with Jim Tripon's shins along with a chest rig to wear. Super thankful for Nick and am glad I ran into him. I'm very busy with finals and thesis presentations so I haven't had a chance yet to do a proper test fit to see what needs to get replaced, but I'll keep everyone posted.

Updating after a few months:

??

Following the cancellation of my ASP order back in April, I was able to find a second-hand ASP kit from a guy in Washington. Nick was very friendly and very transparent throughout the whole transaction so I managed to get the finished armor + helmet + belt for just about $700.

??

As I mentioned to some of you throughout the Terrificon weekend, I've still got a few things to work on for this kit, but I'm very close to finishing it.??

  • I did a test fit way back in May when I first got the kit and found that the thigh pieces were just a little too tight for me. After my first armor party at Ezra's, I decided to use nylon webbing and velcro to extend the circumference of the thigh piece to fit me better.
  • During that first test fit, I also ended up cracking the backplate's shoulder area. I didn't have the tools/knowhow to fix it, so I ended up buying a replacement backplate from Jim Tripon. Gonna visit some auto body shop later this week to see about getting it painted.
  • Helmet is in great condition but needs padding and fans in order to make it comfortable for me to wear during troops. @Wildcardz??and @Feliz??had some great recommendations so I'll be looking on amazon or a sporting goods store for those parts.

??

Once I get the backplate redone and the thigh pieces adjusted, I should be able to adjust the rigging system to make sure the suit lines up how I want it to. I can work with padding and velcro to make sure the armor is actually making contact and not just hanging over me awkwardly.??

A good friend of mine runs Del's Auto Body in Hamden on Dixwell Ave.?? I can text him to see if it's something he'd play with if you want.

Really glad you found a kit! I was disappointed when you were unable to get the initial set delivered. I'm also strongly leaning toward a DT as a second build once my Vader is done, mainly to have options for troops...and because I love DTs. Any pics? Would love to see your set.??

Buddy says he'd love to help with the paint job.?? Just let me know details of what needs to be done and i can meet you at his shop one weekend and we can talk about it with him.

Awesome, appreciate it Joe!??

Nothing too serious, just a simple paint job following the DT coloring scheme outlined here:??https://databank.501st.com/databank/File:Tx_imperial_death_trooper_back_color_scheme.png

I have Jim Tripon's fiberglass resin kit, so I don't think much prep work needs to be done on it for it to be ready for paint. It feels pretty smooth as is. The only worry I have is that the area where the rubber shoulder straps are supposed to go is filled in, as opposed to being hollowed out. I can send you a photo of what I mean when I get home from work today.

So I ended up going with the plan I had set out for my thigh pieces. Because the original 3D printed ribbed portions of my ASP thighs were too tight to fit but too brittle to resize, I decided to take a cutter to them and completely remove this portion: https://imgur.com/gallery/WM1acnh.

This, unfortunately, exposes the blue filament of the 3D print, but should be an easy fix to hide that. Found an alternative rubber matting at Home Depot that closely resembles the ribbed pattern shown on the CRLhttps://www.homedepot.com/p/Rubber-Cal-Corrugated-Fine-Rib-3-ft-x-8-ft-Black-Rubber-Flooring-24-sq-ft-03-167-W-FR-08/302640302. Just waiting for this to arrive and I can work on cutting out enough material to give me the leg room I need and to properly hook it up.

In addition to this, I was finally able to find my dremel to finish milling out the rest of the shoulder cutouts on the new backplate I ordered from Jim Tripon. This week, I'll work on attaching snap points, velcro, and felt to the backplate before getting it painted.

Focused on updating my calf pieces on Tuesday:

The calf armor pieces that I purchased off of the Facebook Death Trooper build group are a set of finished Jim Tripon fiberglass calves. Sturdy and beautifully painted, however, the exposed fiberglass makes wearing them very very itchy haha. I lined the inside of these armor pieces with black felt from thefeltstore.com secured with 3M 77 Spray Adhesive: https://imgur.com/gallery/MOuQAIh.

I'll use the same method to line the backplate once I finish setting up snap points/rigging on the backplate. Was gonna do that earlier this week but apparently I left my soldering iron at Walt's shop😅
